Veli Iz: Skippers enticed by carnal desire

Rumours remain steadfastly in certain skipper quarters that some of them are mooring in the marina of little Veli Iz island just because of pure carnal desire. But please don’t get this wrong. We are referring to the sumptuous steaks served here which could weigh up to one kilo and, according to taste, will be served as rare or well done right from the charcoal grill at the Konoba Mandrac. All the way between Novigrad und Dubrovnik those who already fought such a savoury giant steak are raving with this experience.

But just reducing the Konoba Mandrac to its steaks would not, however, do justice to the place. There is as well the freshly caught seafood, especially mussels in a delicious sauce with just a smack of white wine, leaf parsley, a touch of garlic and the kitchen secret, offering a special treat to even the most critical eaters, as well as the delicious lamb or the home-made Dalmation ham.

In general, you can eat very good on Veli Iz island, all the other restaurants are just as good as this well-known family business. It is always worthwhile to explore the island where, due to its climate and soil condition, nearly as many olive trees are growing as on the neighbouring island of Ugljan. And, obviously, where olive trees are growing, the next oil mill is not far away.

Caution is advised within the small city marina: If the Bora is blowing, skippers are to expect heavy swell. Should it not be blowing for once, then the ferry from Zadar may cause fairly strong movements of the water.

Veli Iz – always worth visiting, and not just because of the steaks:
