Absolutely. But at some point it should also come back up again. It is precisely this second part of the task that many anchoring manoeuvres fail at \u2013 especially over rocky ground. The new BreakAway Anchor aims to solve the problem with a principle that is as simple as it is clever: if the anchor gets caught, it can be released under high tension load and then, so to speak, retrieved in reverse. SeaHelp: however, this is by no means a licence for careless anchoring.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is one of those situations no skipper wants to experience: the anchor is due to be hauled up, the chain comes up vertically, the electric windlass audibly starts working \u2013 yet nothing moves down below. If a fluke has become wedged under a rock, in a crevice or on another obstruction, what should have been a straightforward departure can quickly turn into a minor or major recovery operation. In the worst case, all that remains is to abandon the anchor or the chain.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly where the new, so-called <a title=\"BreakAway Anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/breakawayanchor.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BreakAway Anchor<\/a> from the US manufacturer of the same name comes in. On the outside, it is a classic plough anchor made of highly polished, seawater-resistant 316-grade stainless steel. Its special feature lies in the shank: a patented release mechanism is designed to ensure that an anchor that has become stuck can change its pulling geometry under a defined load. The manufacturer refers to this as &#8220;reverse retrieval&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>How does it work?<\/h2>\n<p>In normal operation, the BreakAway initially behaves like a conventional <a title=\"Wikipedia: Anchor types\" href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plough anchor<\/a>. The pull of the chain acts on the anchor via the shank; the anchor digs into the seabed and develops its holding power. With conventional anchors, problems arise when the fluke becomes lodged under a rock slab, for example. The harder the subsequent pull in the direction of the shank, the more stubbornly the anchor can wedge itself in.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the BreakAway has a mechanical release mechanism built into the shank. Once a structurally predetermined load is reached, the connection gives way and allows the direction of pull to change. This enables the anchor to be pulled out of the obstruction against its normal working direction. The mechanism is then reset and the anchor can be used again. Consumable parts such as cable ties, which are often used as a predetermined breaking point in improvised breakaway solutions, are not required. Especially in rocky cruising areas, this can be a tangible advantage.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the reusability of the mechanism. According to the manufacturer, after a release no securing pin, cable tie or other consumable material needs to be replaced. The mechanism can be reset. The BreakAway is also made of 316-grade stainless steel and manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. The manufacturer states mud, sand and rocky ground as areas of use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is also an indirect benefit:<\/strong> anyone who does not have to free a stuck anchor by brute force also reduces the strain on the chain, shackle, bow fitting and windlass. And ideally, no anchor with a section of chain is left behind as scrap metal on the seabed.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the drawbacks?<\/h2>\n<p>Wherever mechanics come into play, an additional potential source of error also arises. A classic plough anchor has no release mechanism that needs to be checked or whose function needs to be understood. With the BreakAway, on the other hand, the skipper should know when and why the <a title=\"BreakAway Anchor instruction manual\" href=\"https:\/\/breakawayanchor.com\/product-manual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">system releases and how it is correctly reset afterwards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Furthermore, the design should not be mistaken for a guarantee,&#8221;<\/em> says SeaHelp managing director Wolfgang Dauser. If, for example, the entire chain is wrapped around a rock, the anchor is wedged deep in a narrow crevice, or the ground tackle has become caught on a cable, mooring line or other underwater obstruction, even a reversible anchor can quickly reach its limits.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, stainless steel is not a cheap material. The BreakAway clearly does not position itself as an affordable standard anchor, but as a more technically sophisticated premium solution. The manufacturer has not yet published a reliable current sale price for the European market in the product information currently publicly available. By comparison, high-quality stainless steel plough anchors from established premium manufacturers can already cost well over 1,000 euros, depending on weight.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is the BreakAway suitable for?<\/h2>\n<p>The concept may be of particular interest to skippers who regularly cruise in rocky or mixed areas \u2013 the Mediterranean, for example. Among the Croatian islands, in particular, there are certainly stunning bays, but by no means everywhere is there good sandy ground into which an anchor can be dug in without any trouble.<\/p>\n<p>The principle is also of interest for smaller motorboats, anglers and crews who anchor more frequently over structurally complex ground. After all, anyone travelling far from the nearest chandlery is particularly reluctant to leave their main anchor on the seabed.<\/p>\n<h2>So can you just drop the anchor from now on?<\/h2>\n<p><em>&#8220;No,&#8221;<\/em> says Wolfgang Dauser, who spends several weeks in Croatia himself every year and has carried out many hundreds of <a title=\"Anchoring correctly: the anchoring manoeuvre\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sea-help.eu\/en\/guide\/safe-anchoring-tips-anchor-maneuver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anchoring manoeuvres<\/a>. <em>&#8220;Even a BreakAway does not exempt the skipper from the duty to consider the seabed before the anchoring manoeuvre,&#8221;<\/em> says the boating professional. Charts and plotters provide indications of sand, mud, seagrass and rock; in clear water, of course, it is always worth taking an additional look over the side. Cables, pipelines, protected areas and anchoring bans naturally remain off-limits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The basic rules also remain unchanged:<\/strong> a suitably sized anchor, sufficient chain or rope, a sensible scope of chain, an adequate swinging circle and, above all, enough chain paid out. After setting the anchor, it must be checked whether it is actually holding (by reversing to &#8220;dig in&#8221;). For longer stays, weather developments and possible wind shifts must also be factored into the planning.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Because while the BreakAway does solve one particular problem \u2013 recovering a stuck anchor,&#8221;<\/em> it prevents neither the consequences of choosing the wrong anchoring spot nor of poor seamanship \u2013 and it does not turn unsuitable ground into good holding ground. Dauser: <em>&#8220;The skipper still has to pay attention to where he drops his anchor.
