The severe forest and vegetation fire on the Croatian island of Bra\u010d has also reached the coastal region around Milna. Hundreds of people had to be temporarily evacuated by sea. The fire is now under control \u2013 but caution is still advised for sport skippers in the affected area.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The major fire broke out late in the evening of 10 September 2026 in the west of the island of Bra\u010d. The area between Bobovi\u0161\u0107a and Lo\u017ei\u0161\u0107a was particularly affected. Strong winds repeatedly fanned the flames and eventually drove the fire towards the coast near Milna. According to the Croatian fire brigade Hrvatska vatrogasna zajednica, the flames also reached the areas of the bays of Duboka and Osibova during the night of 13 September, threatening buildings and tourist facilities there.<\/p>\n

The situation became particularly dramatic when the fire advanced to within immediate proximity of the coast. At 9:56 pm on 12 September, a large-scale rescue and evacuation operation began, according to the Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure. Under the coordination of MRCC Rijeka and the Split port authority, rescue boats from the port authorities of Split, Milna, Hvar and Makarska, the Croatian coast guard, maritime police, tugs, pilot boats, rescue teams and numerous private boats were deployed.<\/p>\n

According to initial reports, around 500 people were evacuated by sea. Later reports from Croatian broadcaster HRT<\/a> put the total number of people who had to leave the endangered area at around 700.<\/p>\n

More than 4,000 hectares burned<\/h2>\n

The scale of the fire is considerable. According to HRT, more than 4,000 hectares of forest, maquis and vegetation have burned. At times, more than 200 firefighters battled the flames; Canadair firefighting aircraft and other firefighting equipment were also deployed.<\/p>\n

The good news:<\/strong> Since 15 September, the fire has been considered under control. However, firefighting crews remain in the area, extinguishing smouldering embers and securing the terrain. Smoke can still be seen in some places.<\/p>\n

According to the Croatian fire brigade, most of the buildings directly under threat were saved. At the Gava Resort, mainly outbuildings were reported damaged. Two people were taken to Split hospital as a precaution for examination.<\/p>\n

Port of Milna not affected<\/h2>\n

Reports claiming that the fire had spread to the port of Milna cannot be confirmed based on the current information. Rather, it was coastal areas, bays and buildings in the wider vicinity of Milna that were affected. The spectacular evacuations by sea and the fire’s temporary approach to the water’s edge are likely to have given rise to such reports.<\/p>\n

The situation nevertheless remains relevant for sport skippers:<\/strong> Rescue, police, fire and authority boats may continue to operate in the area. In addition, should further fires break out, short-term restrictions in bays and along the coast are possible.<\/p>\n

SeaHelp advises: keep your distance and follow official instructions<\/h2>\n

SeaHelp advises sport skippers to navigate the affected coastal sections around Milna, Duboka and Osibova with particular caution at this time. Emergency vessels on the water must not be obstructed; instructions and orders from port authorities, police and fire services must be strictly observed.<\/p>\n

Anyone planning to enter Milna or bays along the west and southwest coast of Bra\u010d in the coming days should check the current situation before entering. If smoke is visible, SeaHelp recommends keeping sufficient distance from the coast and not entering bays at risk.<\/p>\n

Particularly important:<\/strong> Firefighting aircraft require clear stretches of water to scoop up water. If Canadairs or other firefighting aircraft approach the sea at low altitude, sport boats should keep the relevant area clear over a wide radius (SeaHelp reported on this previously).<\/p>\n

The Croatian fire brigade also explicitly points out that fire areas should not be approached for photo or video purposes, and that access routes and emergency lanes must be kept clear.<\/p>\n
