Highlights:
Conference Center Hall 3 – Lecture program:
Sea gypsies – around the world in eight years
In 1989, they set sail from Europe in their small sailing yacht. They swapped their jobs, apartment, car, savings and insurance for freedom and time. They returned in 1997. In between, they embarked on a fascinating journey around the globe. Doris Renoldner and Wolf Slanec crossed the world’s three great oceans, sailed through storms and agonizing doldrums, anchored off lonely South Sea islands, visited the last star navigators, and lived on fish and coconuts they caught themselves.
A trip around St. Martin, with stops on Anguilla, Tintamarre and St. Barths
Nautical challenges are kept within reasonable limits, relaxed sailing mostly at half wind and a maximum of 20 knots. The Caribbean is considered a dream destination for sailors, with idyllic bays to spend the night in, with bright sandy beaches and a wonderful underwater world for snorkeling. Manfred Ruthner talks about delicious drinks and Caribbean specialties in small coastal towns.
Tour de Lot – Cruising in a houseboat in the south of
France: If you want to travel around the Grand Site Occitanie region as a temporary captain, you don’t need a license. The River Lot is navigable for a total of 74 km through an almost untouched natural landscape. Around every bend in the Lot, a surprise seems to await you: steep, towering white cliffs, a medieval village with stone house facades or a castle high up on a hill. Manfred Ruther tells of the fascinating journey by houseboat.
Around the world by steam and sail
Who hasn’t dreamed of finding treasure in an old attic? For one family, a dusty bundle of yellowed letters was just such a treasure, for in it their long-deceased uncle Alfred whisked them away to an exotic world that was somehow strangely familiar. The stories and anecdotes that circulated in the family about the “Fregattenkapitän” were also found in it – perhaps a little less spectacular than the oral traditions, which had probably undergone some exaggeration over time. Christian Winkler from ÖSYC talks about the “Fregattenkapitän” and his circumnavigation of the world.
Lecture Center Hall 8 – Lecture Program
The Orca Enigma
Since summer 2020 damage sailing yachts off the Strait of Gibraltar, destroy their steering gear and render them unmaneuverable. Several hundred boats have been damaged, and families and crews have had to be rescued by the coast guard. What seems like a detail from Frank Schätzing’s novel “The Swarm” is reality. Is the sea fighting back? Are orcas avenging the death of one of their babies in one of the world’s busiest waterways? Or are the so-called “killer whales” defending their habitat from fishermen? Or is it all just a game with an unpredictable outcome? Even scientists are at a loss. Thomas Käsbohrer takes on the tracing the mystery of the orcas and reports in his lecture on possible causes of orca attacks and experiences of sailors in the Orca Alley.
The liability of the skipper – his rights and his duties (“Toxic” clauses in the charter contract – with fatal consequences)
In principle, the skipper is liable for damages that he culpably inflicts on others, with all of his current and future assets – without limitation! Dr. Fritz Schöchl, founder and head of the company Yacht-Pool, has addressed the legal issues of liability in the field of recreational boating in many specialist publications at home and abroad and is considered an acknowledged expert in this field.
Stage of Competence and Action, Hall 4 – 438
The main focus of the Stage of Competence and Action in Hall 4 is on safety on board, for example: “I take over a charter yacht – what should I look out for?”, “Rolls? But sure! What you should know about using furling sails.”, or the workshop ‘Person over Board – the skipper’s task and important equipment’. These and many other lectures and workshops are provided by sea-man-ship austria and segelwelt.at on the competence and action stage in hall 4 – 438.
OeSV stage hall 4 – 442
Visitors can look forward to informative talks on the OeSV stage, such as: “Offshore Solo Sailing – Adventure or Risk”, “Lake Neusiedl – how the maritime management system works”, “Clipper Round the World Race” or “WindSimulator – how the wind flows through our sails.” The Austrian Sailing Federation will be providing information on the OeSV stage in hall 4 – 442.
Divers – Action Stage, Hall 8 – 820
The Action Stage for divers in Hall 8 offers many exciting presentations and the best tips for your next diving vacation. Among others: “Dream vacation for the whole family in Bali”, “Swiss Wellness Dive Club & Spa”. Markus Trebuch from Sea Sheperd and Adi Huber from Sharkproject will be informing visitors about the protection of the animal world and the preservation and protection of the oceans from illegal exploitation and environmental destruction in the lectures: “Species protection in the world’s oceans” or “Threat to sharks”.
Live workshops in hall 5 – 540
The digital revolution in sailing education from Blue-2 The Sailing Academy: What began about 15 years ago with the development of digital and interactive learning materials as a compact reference work for skippers is now the Blue-2 Sailing Academy with a wide range of courses from navigation and seamanship to a unique didactic concept for practical sailing training.
