The e-vignette, a modern form of toll payment for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3,500 kilograms, has also been available for Slovenia since 2022. With the purchase of an e-vignette, you can use all freeways and expressways in the Republic of Slovenia for the period of validity of the e-vignette.
The e-vignette is linked to the vehicle license plate and has also replaced the old windscreen sticker in Slovenia since 2022. Therefore, buyers must specify the correct license plate number and the country of registration of the vehicle and select the e-vignette for the correct toll class.
If the license plate number in the e-vignette system does not match the license plate number of the vehicle driving on the highway or expressway, the toll is not paid. The customer is responsible for entering the correct license plate number and selecting the toll class.
Toll class 1 includes single-lane motor vehicles, toll class 2A applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3,500 kilograms whose height above the first axle does not exceed 1.3 meters (most cars, minivans, SUVs and so-called pick-ups), if the height is more than 1.3 meters, it is toll class 2B (most combined and light vans).
Good to know: the e-vignette is valid for 365 days from the date of purchase, i.e. a full year
What many drivers don’t know, and what always causes confusion, is that the annual e-vignette is valid from the day selected until the same date in the following year. Example: The annual e-vignette with the selected date of April 15, 2023 is valid up to and including April 15, 2024.
Once you have purchased a vignette, you can register free of charge on dars.si. Just one of the advantages: you will be informed by text message or email as soon as your e-vignette expires. You can also check the validity of the existing vignette at any time or conveniently buy a new one.
Important: the e-vignette must be purchased before driving on the highway or expressway. The e-vignette can be purchased via the online shop: the purchase process is quick and easy. It is also possible to purchase the e-vignette at Dars sales points, DarsGo servis or at authorized e-vignette sales points.
By the way: the almost eight-kilometer-long Karawanken Tunnel, which connects Slovenia with Austria, is exempt from the e-vignette toll. However, this means that use with a vehicle up to 3,500 kilograms gross vehicle weight must be paid for separately.
