Balearic Islands: New etiquette video for sports skippers off Mallorca

An almost three-minute video explains to holidaymakers and local sports skippers what they should – or should not – do at the helm of a boat.

The aim of a campaign by FANMED, the Association for Water Sports and Environmental Protection in the Balearic Islands, which is made up of ten nautical associations, is to prevent accidents and at the same time make boaters aware of environmental regulations at sea. An almost three-minute video explains the rules at sea, reports the Mallorca-Zeitung in an article from 30.7.2024 at mallorcazeitung.es.

The so-called guía náutica is aimed at locals as well as holidaymakers who rent a boat during their stay in Mallorca. The video is therefore available in five languages: Spanish, Catalan, German, French and Italian.

What is self-evident for boat license holders, many of the license-free charter customers do not know

Background: A boating license is only required in Spain for boats over five metres in length and for sailing boats over six meters in length with an engine power of over 15 hp. What is a matter of course for boat license holders, many charter customers without a license do not know.

In this respect, the new Guía Náutica makes perfect sense, as many boat renters do not care about the environment, correct safety distances or the fact that the music on board may be a little too loud for the neighboring moorers.

To publicize the video guide, FANMED has placed flyers with a QR code printed on them in the marinas of Mallorca. This takes smartphone users directly to the video.

The motto of the video: help us protect our sea and our coastline!
When users click on the video, they are first given a friendly welcome to the Balearic Islands. This is followed by the appeal: “help us protect our sea and our coast”. The video appeals to boaters to collect any plastic they find, gives useful tips on correct speeds and safe distances (including from paddlers and divers), followed by an appeal to think about the other boat crews when choosing the volume of the on-board music system.

Alcohol should be avoided on the trip, and the video makes particular reference to correct anchoring maneuvers (how much chain should be deployed, Schwojkreis, not anchoring over seagrass beds).

Finally, there are tips on biodegradable cleaning agents, followed by an appeal not to dispose of the contents of bilge and holding tanks in the sea and not to dump anything else in the sea.
