More than just a restaurant guide: The new “Nautical Gourmet Atlas” wants to make the Adriatic a new experience

Anyone sailing along the Croatian coast knows the problem: the choice seems endless – restaurants, konobas, marinas, wineries, coves, insider tips. And yet the uncertainty remains: what is really good? What is authentic – and what is just clever marketing? The new Nautical Gourmet Atlas wants to provide answers. SeaHelp is also on board: all SeaHelp bases are marked on the maps, and skippers who are not yet familiar with Sea Help can learn everything they need to know about Europe’s leading maritime breakdown service – and why membership is worthwhile – in a dedicated article.

What is actually worth recommending on a sailing trip along the Croatian coast? – This is precisely the question a new project from Croatia sets out to answer: the Nautical Gourmet Atlas, or NGA for short. The name does not conceal a conventional tourism app, as one might expect, nor a booking platform or yet another digital restaurant guide. The initiators rather see their offering as a curated network of selected locations along the Croatian Adriatic – with the aim of restoring trust to travel planning.

At its core, the project features carefully selected restaurants, wineries, marinas, local producers, swimming coves, nautical destinations and unique experiences. The idea: anyone who finds a location in the Nautical Gourmet Atlas should be able to assume that it has been personally vetted and then deliberately chosen.

The idea behind NGA comes from a Croatian TV producer and author who has been involved in nautical tourism for many years

The concept was developed by Željko Stuić, a Croatian TV producer and author who has specialised in nautical tourism, gastronomy and Adriatic destinations for many years. By his own account, he spent more than 15 years travelling and filming along the Croatian coast for international television productions, visiting hundreds of restaurants, marinas, islands and tourist attractions in the process. His projects include the TV formats Sail-Ho Croatia, Wind Masters, Anchored in Paradise and Top Destinations Croatia Coast.

From these experiences, one central insight emerged: today’s travellers have access to almost unlimited information – yet trust in its quality is often lacking. The reason: online reviews are easily manipulated, algorithms favour visibility over substance, and many travellers find themselves falling into classic tourist traps time and again despite thorough research.

Instead of anonymous star ratings or paid placements, NGA focuses on selection over volume

The Nautical Gourmet Atlas therefore deliberately takes a different approach. Instead of anonymous star ratings or paid placements, the project prioritises selection over volume. Premium addresses sit alongside small, family-run establishments that, in the operators’ view, have preserved the original Mediterranean character. The guiding principle: quality over quantity.

Also noteworthy is the project’s close connection to the nautical world: under the menu item “By the sea” (which appears automatically when the interactive map is opened), the project explicitly targets boat owners, charter guests, skippers and travellers who want to actively explore the coastline. The partnership agreed between NGA and SeaHelp is therefore a natural fit: both organisations solve entirely different problems – ones that complement each other perfectly on board.

The Nautical Gourmet Atlas and SeaHelp are a perfect match from a skipper’s perspective

Sea Help has for years been synonymous with breakdown assistance, technical support, safety, weather information and practical help at sea. NGA, on the other hand, aims to provide guidance on the finer things the cruising area has to offer:

  • Where is it worth dropping anchor?
  • Where can you eat well?
  • Which marina actually works?
  • Which konoba isn’t a tourist trap?

The idea may seem simple at first glance – but for skippers it is remarkably valuable.

An example of a “typical Adriatic day”:

The crew sets off by boat from Krk or Cres in the morning. By midday the wind has picked up more than expected. In the afternoon, a safe berth is suddenly needed, fuel is required, a good meal is called for, perhaps some wine – and above all, the aim is to avoid ending up in an overcrowded harbour or a vastly overpriced restaurant.

This is exactly where the two roles complement each other:

Sea Help: “How do I get there safely?”

Nautical Gourmet Atlas: “Is it even worth going there?”

Registered members can benefit from advantages and discounts through a member benefit programme

NGA has also introduced a “Member Benefit” model, through which selected partners offer registered users small perks or discounts – on a voluntary basis and not as the core of the offering. The basic concept is not new; comparable models have existed for some years – such as gastronomic guides like the “Schlemmer Atlas” in German-speaking countries or curated hotel and lifestyle guides for the Mediterranean.

What sets the Nautical Gourmet Atlas apart, however, is the combination of gastronomy, nautical travel and a regional network concept: the platform aims not merely to recommend restaurants, but to create a complete Adriatic ecosystem of hospitality, culinary culture and boating lifestyle.

What’s new about the NGA concept: an editorially curated approach that brings together gastronomy, local producers, marinas and experiences under one brand

Even for Croatia itself, this combination is unusual. While harbour guides, charter platforms, restaurant portals and nautical apps already exist – covering marinas, berths or nautical services – a more editorially curated approach that brings together gastronomy, local producers, marinas and experiences under a single brand has so far been relatively rare. A good idea, in the view of the SeaHelp editorial team.

For the 2026 season, the focus is not on monetisation but on building the network itself. Strategic partners are able to participate free of charge during this early phase. The long-term goal is a trusted recommendation network covering the entire Adriatic.

The ambition is high: less searching – more experiencing. First results are already visible and usable

Whether this will ultimately set a new standard for nautical travellers remains to be seen. The ambition, however, is clear: less searching – more experiencing. First results are already visible and usable: the original project idea has already developed into a publicly accessible platform. It currently has a deliberately lightweight feel, and comes across more as a digital magazine – a “recommendation atlas” with a curated map – than a conventional booking engine.

Users can browse the website by category (Croatian wines, Traditional dishes, Authentic products, Crafts and souvenirs, Traditional sweets, Events and traditions, as well as Restaurants, Wineries & Tastings, Authentic Flavours, Beaches & Marinas or “Places Worth Visiting”) and explore locations along the Croatian coast. One thing stands out: there are deliberately no mass listings and no open user reviews. The presentation style is reminiscent of a blend between the Michelin Guide, a nautical cruising guide and a high-quality travel magazine: light on technology, heavy on atmosphere.

What makes it particularly interesting from a nautical perspective: The concept is reminiscent of what many skippers have been doing informally for years – compiling personal lists, tracking down insider tips, and then painstakingly working them into their own handwritten harbour guides. NGA is attempting to organise exactly this “I know a place” approach as a brand for the first time – but in a way that is public, easily accessible, consolidated and digital.
