Croatia vacation: High prices ensure empty konoba's and restaurants.

Croatia has been extremely popular with German-speaking boating holidaymakers in recent years. In addition to the climate, beautiful nature, crystal-clear water, cozy konobas and good infrastructure for water sports enthusiasts, the main reason for this was the prices. In some cases, they were significantly lower than those of competitors such as Spain, Italy or France. It seems that this has now come to an end. Many boaters and tourists are dissatisfied and are turning their backs on Croatia. The reason: the prices, some of which have risen sharply recently.

And prices in Croatia continue to rise, sometimes to dizzying heights. The Kölner Express is quoted as saying that Croatia is currently the vacation destination with the highest inflation rate.

What is the story behind the "price explosion" claimed in many places in Croatia? What are the reasons for this? Is it still worthwhile for sports skippers or land tourists to spend their vacation in Croatia? Or is it perhaps even better to go elsewhere for the same (high) price? And above all: is an end to the high price level in sight? SeaHelp did a fact check.

First of all: Croatia was and is a popular vacation destination, especially among German-speaking guests, but also among Italian guests. However, it is also a fact that the country has become noticeably more expensive in recent years. In recent months in particular, prices for food, restaurants and accommodation (including boat moorings and camping pitches) have risen sharply.

Some claim that the introduction of the euro is to blame for these price increases. This is disputed by politicians and, on closer inspection, may not be the main reason for the price increases that have been affecting almost all sectors of the Croatian service economy for several months.

The biggest cost driver is the sharp rise in inflation, which is currently stagnating at a high level

One of the biggest cost drivers we identified in our research was the sharp rise in inflation, which is currently stagnating at a high level inflation, which Croatia's economy is currently struggling with. According to Country Data Info, inflation in Croatia was 7.94 percent last year and is even expected to reach 10.78 percent in 2022, while inflation in the previous years (2019 to 2021) was only between 0.15 percent (2020) and 2.55 percent (2021).

This had led to a sudden rise in prices, particularly for accommodation, but also for services; food was also suddenly noticeably more expensive than in Germany or Austria, for example.

Many SeaHelp members on Croatia cruises reported "exploding" prices in restaurants along the Croatian coast. According to our own research, it is a fact that there have indeed been significant price increases in Croatian restaurants, especially in the last two seasons. This applies equally to food and drinks, regardless of whether you visit a simple or upscale restaurant.

"In the restaurants we visited on our extended trip to Croatia this year, we were charged between 95 and 100 euros for a kilo of fish," reports SeaHelp Managing Director Wolfgang Dauser, who has been traveling to Croatia by boat for several weeks a year for 15 years.

A small beer (0.33l) cost between 4.50 and six euros, and for a large beer (0.5l) you had to pay between five and seven euros, and not in a bar, but in a simple konoba, which is a lot by Croatian standards.

Reservations in restaurants are often no longer necessary as there is plenty of space available

Friends have reported that the konoba's are currently often empty or only half of the tables are occupied, as the crews have reacted to the increased prices and now go out to eat much less often - and instead cater for themselves more often, says Wolfgang Dauser. "In central Dalmatia, a konoba owner even shouted from the terrace at around 9 p.m.: "Half price from now on!" because the bay was full of boats, but his restaurant was almost empty."

"Croatia Reservations in konoba's & restaurants - often unavoidable in previous years - are now mostly no longer necessary.[/caption]

Reservations in restaurants - as was often unavoidable in previous years - are now mostly no longer necessary, as there is always enough space available, Dauser continued. The absolute "highlight" (in a negative sense) was the price for a simple starter and fish for two people without alcoholic drinks a few days ago on the island of Zut: "we were asked to pay more than 170 euros for this".

In general, there was "less going on at sea" this season, according to boat professional Dauser, who noted that there were "fewer charter yachts and also far fewer yachts flying the Italian flag" - which had accounted for more than half of the berths in recent years.

The SeaHelp Managing Director describes further impressions of this year's boating season in Croatia as follows: "In the north of Dugi Otok, we had to pay 75 euros (5 euros per meter of boat length) per night for a buoy." In Hvar, he and his crew had wanted to dispose of on-board garbage, which turned out to be "really tedious" as there were no longer any garbage racks (as used to be the case) in any of the bays they called at; a garbage boat from the Hvar island administration had charged a disposal fee of seven euros for a large garbage bag.

"High Garbage boat: € 7 for the disposal of a garbage bag![/caption]

There are many reasons for the price increases in the food service industry and other sectors

There are many reasons for the price increases in the food service industry and other sectors: in addition to high inflation, rising raw material costs and higher food prices also play a decisive role. Added to this are current government measures to improve working conditions (specifically the increase in the minimum wage), which is further driving up operating expenses, particularly in the catering sector.

"Average real gross wages rose by 10% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. An increase in the statutory minimum wage by 20 percent also came into force at the beginning of the year," Stefanie Ziska, Managing Director of the German-Croatian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Croatia) of Germany Trade & Invest, is quoted on her website gtai.de on this topic; in the public sector there were "strong salary increases" in April 2024, but these rising wage costs are "a problem" for Croatia's competitiveness.

How should boaters, land-based tourists and Croatia lovers in general behave in future? Ultimately, every guest must decide this question for themselves. However, there are some signs that the situation could soon improve and prices in Croatia could soon return to a more normal level - although it can be assumed that prices will probably not return to the levels of three or four years ago.

In May 2024, the price increase in Croatia was 6.1 percent. However, the Croatian National Bank expects a significant slowdown in the near future

As Germany Trade & Invest recently reported on its website gtai.de, consumption is currently boosting the economy in Croatia - despite many "price explosions" in the country. According to the report, Croatia's economic growth is currently one of the strongest in the EU, and tourism is driving consumption. Above all, inflation in Croatia is falling.

Specifically, private consumption grew by six percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, and this momentum should continue throughout the year, according to analysts. Strong tourism plays an important role here: in the first four months of 2024, the total number of registered tourists was 4.7 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. Gross fixed capital formation grew even more strongly than private consumption in the first quarter of 2024, with an increase of 10.8%.

However, as gtai.de further reports, Croatia continues to struggle with high inflation. In May 2024, the price increase was 6.1 percent. However, the Croatian National Bank expects a reduction to 3.8 percent for the year as a whole and to 2.6 percent in 2025.

The authors of the report point out a Croatian paradox: "a stronger tourism season can further accelerate GDP growth as a driver of consumption", but "too much tourism could fuel inflation again". The conclusion: Croatia would be "well advised to reduce its high dependence on tourism and ensure greater sustainability".
No question, Croatia is popular with boaters from German-speaking countries as ever. However, many tourists complained this season about "price increases", "sharply increased prices" and even "rip-offs" in restaurants. This - often unfounded - blanket judgment is our SeaHelp editors in recent months once pursued and has looked closely at the price situation.

Croatia is known among sport skippers as an ideal sailing area and cruising area for motor yachts: there are many sheltered anchorages, crystal clear water, you can explore culture and Venetian culture. If you want, you can go on longer trips by boat or just island hopping.

The marina and port infrastructure works well, and in case of an emergency, the yellow response boats of Europe's largest breakdown service on the water, SeaHelp, are only a few minutes away to help quickly and without red tape.

One of the main reasons for many sports skippers to visit the Croatian Adriatic (Hrvatski Jadran in Croatian), which stretches along the eastern coast of the Adriatic between the Prevlaka peninsula and the Savudrijska vala (but also the adjacent Slovenian Riviera, as well as the Montenegrin coast to the south), is the many traditional konobas, restaurants and cafes that are often located just a few meters from the anchorage right on the shore, or at least within a short walking distance.

Reports of "sharply increased prices" in Croatian konobas have been followed up by SeaHelp editors

But some Croatian vacationers reported that prices in restaurants had "risen sharply" this season. It is clear that Verteuerungen within the culinary range, if they would have actually taken place and would not be comprehensible, can cloud the vacation joy already quite a bit. For this reason, the SeaHelp editorial team has looked at the price situation in Croatian restaurants in recent months once more closely.

Example beer: our SeaHelp crew has in the "Spirito" for the small beer 7 euros and in the "Riva" in Punat only 2.20 euros. The "Riva" is a café and restaurant with sea view in the center of Punat, the "Spirito" is a top restaurant with upscale cuisine. Here it is worth in any case - before - a comparison, to avoid later anger about "excessive prices".

"Spirito

If you want a table with a lake view, you often have to pay extra for that view

For example, we had good experiences in Punat at the "Lara": there we paid 3.20 euros for a (small) beer; this restaurant is located in the "second row" (without sea view), but has excellent cuisine. More expensive - but therefore located in the "first row" directly on the water - is the beer, on the other hand, in the "Konoba Ribarska Koliba" in Veli Losinj. In this respect, not much has changed in terms of price: if you want a table with a "sea view", you usually have to pay for it.

https://youtu.be/MX6b38Zs8xU[/embed]

Savings can be made who sticks to local beer and local products, here there are no additional costs for the expensive import

Often a few euros can also be saved by ordering local beer, this includes for example Ozujsko, Karlovacko, Tomislav, Pan, Adria, LAB Split Craft or the Istarsko. Well-known international beer brands have to be imported, which regularly drives up the price.

The same, by the way, applies unreservedly to the (sometimes excellent) Croatian wines. And: of course, you pay disproportionately more for a drink in the tourist stronghold of Dubrovnik (up to nine euros for a beer) than in a somewhat less crowded place. Even there, according to our research, not much has changed.

If in doubt: to inform yourself in advance often saves a nasty surprise when the bill comes

Everyone can decide for themselves whether and where to order a drink, but should not complain afterwards about "immensely increased" or "overpriced" prices. Often it is better to inform yourself in advance, and if necessary, it may be a good idea to go to the supermarket on the corner to stock up on drinks for a sundowner on board.

According to the experience of SeaHelp staff, one must currently expect prices per person of between 80 and 120 euros in restaurants with upscale, experimental cuisine in Croatia, for example in the "Opat" and "Ravni Žakan" (Kornati Islands), "Spirito" (Kaprije), "Zori" (Sveti Klement) or "Žmara" (Zut). A complaint of a guest, who had paid for himself and his 11 colleagues) in the "Žmara" on Zut 1,800 euros, and this price for unreasonable and strongly overpriced, we can not understand.

On the one hand, the many drinks here have made the restaurant visit more expensive, on the other hand, this is simply the wrong restaurant if you want to eat price-consciously. One thing it certainly isn't, however, is a rip-off.

The prices for good, traditional Croatian cuisine have not changed according to our research

According to our experience this season, you have to expect prices between 30 and 50 euros per person in restaurants with sometimes very good maritime cuisine, such as in the "Lara" (Punat) or in "Vojko" on the (island of Rab). For traditional Croatian cuisine this summer you paid prices between 15 and 30 euros per person. Not much has changed there.

A good example is the "Riva" (Punat), but also some pizzerias and so-called fast food stores sometimes offer good cuisine. Here, too, is valid: Eyes on before the restaurant visit, compare is worthwhile. This also applies to location and/or the region of the konobas - for example, we paid for the same dish on the islands 40, and on the mainland 80 euros. If you "blindly" stumble into a restaurant, and then have to collect negative experiences, it is often your own fault.

Restaurant visitors should be clear beforehand about which restaurant "suits" him.

"It is important that each restaurant visitor should be clear in advance, which restaurant suits him, and how much he wants to spend", says SeaHelp managing director and gourmet Wolfgang Dauser, who himself spends each season several weeks by boat on the Croatian Adriatic and regularly "tests" the most diverse restaurants.

His tip: Each restaurant in Croatia should have a menu card before the entrance, on which the food selection as well as the prices are evident. So misunderstandings would be avoided in advance. By the way: many restaurants in Croatia now have online presences with the corresponding offers including photos, and there are reviews of the restaurants on various web portals. Also here - before - a look is worthwhile.

"Spirito

Many vacationers were a bit more impatient and irritable this season - often the only reason for negative posts on social media

"From the feeling I do not have the impression that Croatia, Italy or Slovenia have become more expensive this season", Wolfgang Dauser confirms the (not representative) impression of the SeaHelp editorial team. However, what became obvious this season is that "many vacationers were a bit more annoyed, irritated and very impatient", Dauser's summary says.

The reasons for it can be of various nature and lie presumably (among other things) in the fact that with many tourists the financial pressure within the private range increased, or that it succeeds many simply not so well to switch off in the vacation times times.

If then some of these vacationers only negative posts on the net, can quickly create the impression of increases in price and rip-off - which we can not confirm by our own experiences this summer expressly.

According to SeaHelp research, in Croatia in this season partly the turnover decreased significantly

Partly, the SeaHelp editorial staff could also observe this season - sometimes significant - declines in sales: "Restaurant owners with whom I have spoken, talk about minus 20 percent at the restaurants in Croatia and even up to minus 30 percent in Italy", reports about Wolfgang Dauser of his experiences this summer. The tourists would eat "fewer steaks, scampi and fish", but "increasingly order cutlets, cevapcici and spaghetti", which is "much cheaper".

His conclusion: many vacationers would currently save on the Croatian Adriatic, which is easy on vacation (if you heed the above advice). A trend to increased prices in restaurants, pubs and cafes, as is partly reported in the online media, is in any case not apparent and can not be confirmed so.

Book recommendation: "Gourmet Trips in Croatia - 66 Top Restaurants on the Coast\
Whoever visits ACI Marina Supetarska Draga in the northern part of the island of Rab should not miss to visit Vojko Krišković's restaurant. In 2021, ten Croatian restaurants were awarded one star each. The star restaurants are almost all located near harbors or marinas - perfect for water sports enthusiasts.

No less than ten marina restaurants in Croatia bear one of the coveted Michelin stars; according to their own definition, each of these has "a cuisine full of finesse" and is therefore "worth a stop". According to the testers, all ten starred restaurants have one thing in common: they offer their guests "products of selected quality, an unmistakable finesse on the plate, a taste that is brought to the point, as well as a constantly high level of food preparation.

First published at the opening of the World's Fair in Paris on April 14, 1900, and initially limited exclusively to France and published by the tire manufacturer Michelin as a workshop guide for motorists, the "Red Michelin" advanced in the following years to become a recognized gastronomic guide; from 1926, the Michelin Guide gained even greater importance for the restaurant industry because it awarded individual stars for the first time, and since 1931 also two and even three stars for particularly outstanding culinary achievements.

A Michelin star means "a kitchen full of finesse - worth a stop!"

According to the company, evaluation criteria include the "consistent quality of ingredients and their freshness, their expert preparation, the harmony of the flavorful combination, and the innovation and uniqueness of the dishes, reflected in creativity and personal touch."

In the German edition of the guide, the meaning of Michelin stars is described - cleverly in marketing terms - as follows: one star - "A cuisine full of finesse - worth a stop!", two stars - "A top cuisine - worth a detour!", three stars - "A unique cuisine - worth a trip!"

Ten restaurants received the coveted gastro award last year

Last year, ten restaurants in Croatia were awarded the coveted star by Michelin, whose symbol is more reminiscent of a flower with six petals than a star.

In France, in addition to étoile (star), the Michelin star is often colloquially described by the word macaron (macaroon). SeaHelp briefly introduces the restaurants awarded a "macaron" in each case (starting in the north) and offers tips on how best to reach them by boat.

Starred restaurant number 1: Nebo

Of Nebo in Rijeka, Michelin writes: "Located on the fifth floor of the brand-new Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa, the restaurant offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, the coastline, and the pristine island of Cres. The dishes tell of Croatia's culinary history, offering traditional specialties made from regional ingredients as well as more daring, modern and creative dishes."

For yacht owners, there is an industrial port (not particularly attractive) right in Rijeka, but at least you can moor here for a while. A bit to the southeast is Kraljevica, where there is a new recreational boat harbor on the northwest shore of the entrance to the former shipyard harbor; to the west of Rijeka is Opatija, in the oldest seaside resort in Croatia yachts can moor either in the ACI Marina, in the Hotel Marina Admiral or in the city harbor.

Starred restaurant number 2: Draga di Lovrana

"The chef relies on products from local producers and on well-balanced, first-class recipes, which he transforms into modern, imaginative and unforgettable dishes. A stunning location with magnificent views from the dining room and terrace. There are also inviting rooms available for overnight stays," the Michelin praises the Draga di Lovrana.

If you want to stop here, you can either moor your lines directly in Lovran, there are a few berths on the western side of the pier, or you can use the ACI Marina Opatija Icicki to the north, the Hotel Marina Admiral or the Opatija town harbor. If you're lucky, you'll catch one of the few spots right on the pier in Ika.

Star restaurant number 3: Monte

"The contemporary, cool style of this romantic restaurant with subdued lighting contrasts with the old town and its enchanting streets," the French Gourmet Guide says of Monte, adding that the cuisine surprises with "creative, sometimes theatrical dishes prepared using modern cooking techniques," the result being "handsomely presented dishes with intense flavors."

Yacht owners can moor at ACI Marina Rovinj. The high-priced luxury marina opened in 2019 and offers 192 berths for yachts from 12 to 35 meters in length. Just south of the marina is a fee-based buoy field. North of the marina (and northeast of the offshore islet of Sv. Katarina) there is a town harbor.

Starred restaurant number 4: Agli Amici Rovinj

The "Pearl of Istria", founded by the Romans, has two star restaurants to its credit. The Red Michelin writes about Agli Amici: "The restaurant is the Istrian version of the Italian Agli Amici di Godia and has the same philosophy as its Italian counterpart: nothing is taken for granted and new ideas and ways are always sought to best showcase the high-quality ingredients of the region.

Located in the luxurious Grand Park Hotel on the elegant promenade of the marina, the restaurant offers three tasting menus, one of which is dedicated to Croatian cuisine."

Star restaurant number 5: Boškinac

"An interesting address on the northernmost part of the sprawling island of Pag. Guests are warmly welcomed and the young chef goes all out to use the products of the island and the surrounding area (fish, pork, the famous goat cheese, oil, wine, etc.) to create delicious dishes that he interprets in a modern way.

A hotel and a wine cellar complete the offer: reasons to stay are many!" is how the Guide Michelin describes the restaurant in Navalja - located in the north of the island of Pag on a well-protected bay - between the larger cities of Rijeka in the north and Zadar in the south.

By boat: In the well-visited seaside resort of Novalja, there are guest berths for yachts on the inside of the breakwater; also, in Stara Novalja, you can moor alongside at the old ferry pier in town. Another possibility to moor by boat is in Stara Novalja-drljanda a bit north of Stara Novalja; in this emergency ferry port there are moorings at the pier in front of Murings.

Star restaurant number 6: Alfred Keller

"The elegant restaurant at Alhambra Boutique Hotel offers a lovely terrace overlooking Čikat Bay. While simple dishes are on the menu during the day, the restaurant serves upscale dining in the evening with only one menu to choose from-three or four courses. Let the chef know if you have any special requests when you make your reservation," writes the Red Michelin about the "Alfred Keller" in Mali Lošinj.

For yacht owners, there are several options for a visit to the restaurant: either turn directly to the (small) Marina Cikat, or go (on the other, more northern side of Mali Lošinj) to the - in summer lively - town harbor. Just a short distance to the northwest is Marina Lošinj (west of the Privlaka Channel) and the Mali Lošinj Yacht Club (east of the Privlaka Channel).

Starred restaurant number 7: Pelegrini

About Pelegrini in Sibenik, Michelin writes: "Located directly across from the beautiful Cathedral of St. James, the air-conditioned rooms of this restaurant invite you to linger. Inside the venerable building, old elements and modern influences combine in a stylish and informal way - perfectly matching the impeccable service.

Chef and owner Rudi Stefan is a self-taught chef with high standards. He takes care to use only high-quality products from the region, which he reinterprets in a modern way. In doing so, flavors of the mainland and the sea find their way into his compositions in equal measure. In the tasting menu, the number of courses and dishes can be chosen. Oil lamps on the steps create an unforgettable atmosphere in summer."

In Sibenik, yacht owners can moor either directly in the town harbor or in the modern Marina Mandalina located just southeast of it - a perfect starting point to either explore the offshore islands via Sv. Ante or cruise up the Krka River to the national park of the same name and the Krka waterfalls.

Starred restaurant number 8: LD Restaurant

"This could be one of many tourist spots on the main street, but the Mediterranean cuisine is surprisingly inventive. Lots of local dishes and especially excellent fish!" is the succinct verdict of the Gourmet Guide.

Boat owners who want to pay a visit to the "LD" either moor up in the ACI Marina Korcula (beware: swell at the outer breakwater due to passing ships) or anchor in one of the four arms of Luka Banja Bay a little to the west. A bit further southeast is the Lumbarda marina.

Starred restaurant number 9: Restaurant 360

"An impressive restaurant in the historic city wall. From the curved terrace on the wall, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the old harbor. The stylish, creative cuisine puts a lot of emphasis on presentation - the dishes almost look as if they were meant to win an art competition. An extraordinary gastronomic experience! The wine list is appropriately exquisite and the attentive service staff will be happy to advise you on this!" notes Gastro-Michelin on the "360".

In Dubrovnik there is an old town harbor (south of Dubrovnik, opposite Lokrum), but there are no guest berths available, only (short) mooring for embarking and disembarking is tolerated. If you want to moor your lines for a longer period of time, go to ACI Marina Dubrovnik, located north of the city, at the mouth of the Rijeka Dubrovatska.

Starred restaurant number 10: Noel

About Noel (located most north, but just east of the Adriatic Sea; the only one of the ten starred restaurants in Croatia that, unfortunately, cannot be reached by boat), the Guide Michelin judges: "The new chef Bruno Vokal, although young, has already worked in other starred restaurants and has an impressive career. Today, he leads this restaurant with its soft lighting and trendy, internationally inspired interior design.

Vokal has an interesting relationship with Croatian culinary traditions, which he reinterprets with a modern and personal touch. Guests are offered two 6-course tasting menus: the "Green" and the "Chef Experience." The "Noel" is located just a few minutes by car from the airport in Zagreb - recommended for visitors to the city or for charterers arriving or departing via Zagreb.
