Is it possible to travel to Croatia on vacation again as early as Easter 2021 despite Corona? This question is not only asked by boat and yacht owners, but also by many vacationers who traditionally want to enjoy the first warming rays of sunshine on the Adriatic. To anticipate: The situation, of course, depends heavily on the development of incidence...
Read moreSince the development of new corona infections in the respective travel areas will be a special priority for vacation planning in Croatia in 2021, SeaHelp has already prepared the 7-day incidence for Croatia and the 14-day incidence for Croatia in tables and diagrams on a daily basis and published them on the homepage. The values come from the figures of...

In order to properly evaluate this news, which of course once again causes a stir in the media and can also...

A fact that particularly concerns boat owners, charter guests, but also hotel, apartment and camping vacationers. Read moreThe latest 7-day incidences of the coronavirus pandemic in Croatia raise eyebrows: Istria had one of the lowest levels in all of Croatia, even in all of Europe, with an average of 30.2 new coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants (7-day incidence) in the last seven days, according to official figures from Croatia. Thus, the northern part of Croatia has already...
Read moreThe European standard for correctly assessing the coronavirus situation in individual countries, including Croatia, is presented in the 7-day incidence (Germany) and the 14-day incidence (Austria). Unfortunately, Croatian websites such as koronavirus.hr only list the current cases and the total number of infected persons in Croatia, so that especially holidaymakers from Germany and Austria do not have a direct possibility...

Read moreYes. Investigations into this could quickly give the all-clear: The vaccines also work against the mutated pathogens. Because the vaccines are based on mRNA technology, manufacturers can also quickly adapt them to mutations. Within six weeks, the vaccine can be replaced and modified. Thus, changes in the pathogen do not lead to a loss of efficacy.

Corona rules observe

In addition, of course, the basic rules still apply in Corona times: Keep your distance, follow hygiene rules and wear a mask, as well as strictly monitored quarantine for infected persons. This is the only way to contain the uncontrolled spread of mutant coronavirus D.1.1.7.

Vaccination Advantages: Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Romania, Greece, Estonia.

In the longer term, according to the neutral assessment of the editorial team (even if it may not please some vaccination opponents), unrestricted travel will probably only be possible for vaccinated persons. Soberly considered, the indications for it increase: Denmark is planning a digital ID card on a smartphone that could open borders, and Sweden wants to have the digital infrastructure for a vaccination passport in place by June that would allow the same. In Poland and Romania, vaccinated people are already exempt from the 10-day quarantine requirement because of the coronavirus. Greece agreed with Israel a kind of travel freedom for verifiably vaccinated persons, Estonia also creates relief - other countries will probably follow the example soon.

Vacation 2021 not in danger

Croatia, as one of the countries where tourism has a significant impact on the state budget, will also not be able to ignore this fact in the longer term. In an overall package consisting of freedom of travel for vaccinated persons and persons recovered from the coronavirus, inexpensive antigen tests at the vacation destination and significantly eased entry regulations, the SeaHelp editorial team currently sees no danger for a stay in Croatia in 2021.

Croatia: Low incidence figures

Until that happens, however, patience remains the virtue of the hour. Entry restrictions in Austria and Germany are more of a temporary nature and due to the current development. One thing is certain, however: the situation in Croatia, due to the drastic entry restrictions as well as the measures in the country itself, is much better than in most parts of Germany and Austria, especially if one considers the incidence values of the coastal regions.

Uncomprehension for Austrian entry regulation

However, the fact that, according to the Austrian entry regulation as amended on Feb. 10, 2021, Greece is listed in Annex A. The following applies to the country according to § 4, para. 1, item1:

From EU/EEA states as well as from Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican, persons may enter without restriction if they enter from a state or territory listed in Annex A and, upon entry, credibly demonstrate that they have stayed exclusively in Austria or in a state or territory listed in Annex A within the past ten days.

Equal treatment Greece/Croatia?

What is not taken into account: The populous Athens metropolitan area is going into lockdown again this week because the number of new coronavirus infections is skyrocketing. Where is the equal treatment with Croatia, a country where the infection incidence is much lower? This question should be explained to the numerous Austrians, regardless of whether they own boats or real estate in Croatia, when ten days of quarantine are threatening after the necessary care of their property in other European countries at home in Austria.
Good news for all water sports enthusiasts and vacationers with destination Croatia: The 7-day incidences of coronavirus in the coastal regions of Istria, Kvarner Bay, Zadar, Sibenik and in the Dubrovnik region are already at the beginning of February further in "decline". But it is not only in Istria, where there are currently only a good 24 new coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants, that incidence figures are also falling in other regions.

Also Punat/Krk with low corona incidence

In addition to Istria County, Primorje-Gorski Kotar, in whose area the Punat marina is located, has already recorded a relatively low incidence, with a 7-day incidence of 90.8 at the beginning of February. While it is inevitably higher than Istria due to the influence of the large port city of Rijeka, if the Rijeka factor is factored out, the 7-day incidence in the Punat/Island of Krk area should be at about the same low level as Istria.

Incidence value Zadar also below 100

Only in Zadar County did the numbers increase. From 90.4 new coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants on January 25, the region recorded an increase to 95.7 in early February. However, there is a possibility here that follow-up reports from the previous week may have reversed the trend.

Significant decrease in 7-day incidence in Sibenik area

Sibenik-Knin is likely to report the largest decline. While there were 164.7 new coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants on Jan. 25, the penultimate cutoff date, the 7-day incidence is now only 126.8.

Split also reports declining numbers

In the Split region, the relevant 7-day incidence of coronavirus decreased from 121.2 to 112.7 at the beginning of February.

Dubrovnik and Lika Senj at low levels

Incidence for the Dubrovnik region held relatively steady at 92.4, as did Lika Senj at 73.

7-day incidence Croatia: 84.8

For all of Croatia, incidence figures (7-day) decreased from 85.8 to 84.8, according to official Croatian reports.

14-day incidence: Croatia 181.34 | Austria 224.32 | Germany 218.4

Comparing 14-day incidences using figures announced by the EU (as of 4. February), Croatia officially stands at 181.34, Austria at 224.32 new infections in 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants, and Germany at a 14-day incidence of 218.4. The corresponding long-term incidence value for Italy is still quite high at 284.55. Slovenia, with a 14-day incidence of 818.83, currently ranks rather poorly in the Mediterranean region.

Corona measures are having an effect

Confirmed in the trend: countries that were able to enforce harsh measures against large parts of the population over the winter months are already in a much better position at the preliminary stage of spring, which should already be seen at least in the Adriatic Sea.

Starts the season already Easter?

Especially the classic vacation countries in the Mediterranean region, such as Italy and Croatia, are currently urged to further reduce the incidence figures of the coronavirus, in order to be able to receive at least Easter the first guests again.

Continued tough corona measures in Croatia

Croatia is taking a rather rigid approach here that is not going down well with all segments of the population: Restaurant owners and gym operators in particular do not agree with the current government measures, and in Zagreb these groups are repeatedly protesting for a faster opening.
How will tourism in Croatia, especially Istria, develop in 2021 under the influence of the Corona virus? A fact that particularly concerns boat owners, charter guests, but also hotel, apartment and camping vacationers. "Should I book already or better still wait and see how the situation regarding the coronavirus pandemic will continue?" This crucial question is probably currently asked by most Corona-afflicted Croatia fans with a pronounced need for vacation. A little help is provided by Denis Ivošević, director of the Tourism Association of Istria in the SeaHelp interview, who confidently already clearly defines the tourism target for 2021, at least for the region of Istria: "We expect 70% of tourism numbers based on the record year 2019," is his statement in the SeaHelp interview on the situation in Istria.

Istria's incidence numbers consistently at low level

Purposeful optimism or the much-cited "whistling in the woods"? Rather not, because the latest coronavirus incidence figures (7-day incidence) already showed values in January of just over 30 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in Istria that other regions of Europe can only dream of. Why Istria in particular was largely spared from the pandemic, the SeaHelp editorial team wanted to find out first hand in an interview with Denis Ivošević, the director of the Istria Tourism Association. Here are the answers to our questions:

SeaHelp: When it comes to the number of new infections with the coronavirus, Istria already took a special position in Croatia in 2020 and was partially exempt from travel warnings. What reasons can be cited for the current sharp drop in incidence figures again?

Istria: Early rapid measures introduced

Denis Ivošević: Istria is an exceptionally well-ordered and organized region, where the communication protocol between the private and public sectors works particularly well. That is mainly the reason why Istria is a successful region in all segments of society. When Corona first appeared, we were the first region to introduce strict measures for isolation and lockdown (long before this was introduced at the national level), we created precise protocols on who must cooperate within what timeframe and with whom in the event of a possible virus outbreak, so that we were prepared for great challenges. A peculiarity of Istria is that the citizens of Istria showed willingness to cooperate in this sense and acted responsibly, so that Istria was one of the first regions in Europe to present itself without a single Corona patient in the hospitals already at the end of March. We have worked through a successful tourist season in extremely uncertain and uncertain conditions and in mid-October we were the only region in Europe marked with green color..

Such a situation continued at the beginning of this year, in the past 20 days Istria has an average of under 10 newly infected with the coronavirus per day. This, in my opinion, is a key condition to maintain such a situation, so that we can open all the sooner in safe conditions for our main tourist markets..

Discipline of the people of Istria with crucial

SeaHelp: What impact do they think this will have on tourism in Istria?

Denis Ivošević: That it was possible to do business excellently even under the Covid-19 conditions is best shown by the examples of small family hotels, the villas in the interior of Istria, nautical tourism, as well as the best Istrian restaurants, taverns, wine cellars and oil mills, which offered security and isolation from tourist happenings in the best possible way. Many among them have achieved excellent results and this is the best reference of how to work and how to work in Covid-19 conditions...! But, it is clear that Corona has significantly shaken all segments of society, especially the economic part. The more responsible and participative we are, and the less advocates of conspiracy theories spread their crude ideas, the better we will help ourselves without looking for the culprit in others, in conspiracies, in mystical clubs that supposedly direct the world. We just stay responsible and patient and everything will fall into place..

From past experience we know what the key to success is:.

-

- Qualitative private and public sector collaboration

- Maintaining a good epidemiological situation in the region/country

- To have a prepared protocol of obligations and responsibilities in the event of the spread of Covid-19

- Using our diplomats in the role of lobbyists and in the fight against fake news in our tourist destinations

- The tourism sector must communicate in a timely manner and through proper channels with the media in our main strongest tourist destinations about the good situation in Istria/HR

- Track the epidemiological situation in our most important tourist markets

- Be ready to launch an effective promotional campaign within a short period of time.

For 2021: Istria expects 20% more tourists than in 2020

SeaHelp: Do you expect an increase in overnight stays in 2021 compared to 2020?

Denis Ivošević: In 2020, from a standing start, we have achieved more than 50% of the number of overnight stays compared to the record year of 2019. Taking into account that Istrian tourism is primarily based on foreign guests, this is an extremely good result under the conditions in which the 2020 tourist season took place. In 2021, assuming that no undesirable or unexpected situations will happen with the vaccination process, we expect a realization in the amount of 70% on the basis of 2019.

Early border openings: "Depends on Corona development!"

SeaHelp: Can you imagine that Istria will be one of the first Croatian counties to reopen early to the entry of tourists? Possibly even earlier than other destinations on the coast?

Denis Ivošević: It is always difficult and ungrateful to make any forecasts, because we still have very many unknowns in the formula, over which we cannot exert any concrete influence. Here I am thinking of the appearance of new variants of the coronavirus and its markedly dynamic spread, I am thinking of the process of obtaining vaccine and the process of vaccination. We depend, above all, on how the situation will be in our most important tourist markets: Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, the Netherlands, etc. But, if we look at the experience so far, Istria has definitely been a best practice example of how to efficiently fight the coronavirus while maintaining tourism and real life.

Istria already shows relatively good booking levels in early 2021

SeaHelp: What is your personal opinion regarding the 2021 tourist season in Istria? What is the booking status?

Denis Ivošević: The current situation is such that we have inquiries and that is the most important fact at this moment, as long as the main topic worldwide is called Covid-19. Sure, in isolated segments of accommodation we already have promising booking numbers, but we are all aware that the real match will only take place when it is certain that the situation is pointing in the direction of calming down. Then it will be important to react accordingly and quickly, as it is obvious that last minute bookings will be in focus also this year. In general, all of us in Istrian tourism are optimistic, I would say real optimists and therefore we are preparing as if everything will be fine. Our goal, as previously mentioned, is to realize 70% of the sales and overnight stays from the record year 2019..

SeaHelp: Thank you very much for the interview, Mr. Ivošević.
Interview Denis Ivošević, Director Tourism Association Istria: "2021 Istria expects 70% of the tourists of the record year 2019, despite Corona".
